obdc diagnostic 2 codes 700 1988

I could use some clarification of the FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm.
I had no stored fault codes. When testing sensors in mode 2, socket6 the TPS codes operate properly. For RPM when I crank the starter the LED stops flashing but displays no codes.
Diagnostic says RPM sensor faulty if no code is displayed and LED continues to flash.? I only have half the symptom?
When testing sensors in mode 2 socket 2 the TPS and RPM sensor signal from ignition codes are OK. Is this a different side of the RPM sensor?
My engine problem is intermittent failure to start, cold or warm. I have verified that this is due to no spark. I have voltage on coil primary. This brings up another point, a pink wire was installed from the starter solenoid to the coil, not OEM but professional with connectors and careful routing. Is this an attempt by PO to repair starting problem? I have disconnected it and intermittent starting persists.
