240 Timing Belt 200

Hi all,

I'm about to embark on my first Volvo tuneup on my daughters "new" 1983 240 wagon. I think I've got everything under control for the most part but I'm wondering about the timing belt. I see that the new belt has markings on it which are supposed to correspond to the markings on the wheels. Why should these belt marks matter as long as the dimples on the wheels line up with the marks on the block, valve cover, etc.?
What effect would not having these belt marks aligned have?

Thank you
