Box Beam Frame 1800

Thad;

I used them last time around...see: http://www.intelab.com/swem/DeLorean.htm and years later, and without paint, the repair panels STILL look like the day they were welded in...

but, some issues exist:

1. Its tough stuff! More dense than mild steel, SS is a bear to work with to put it mildly...at first, a different word beginning with b came to mind...it can't be cut or worked using the normal gauge tools a body shop has...I doubt they will even want to talk about using it!...so one has to do the work themselves...
2. Corrosion of not the SS, but everything else...and you cant make the whole car of it (DeLorean's attempt notwithstanding)! Although only small, a galvanic potential will be created with the existing mild steel sheetmetal of the car (see galvanic chart), so a zinc sacraficial anode ala boating world is required...another expense...
3. Financing the project. Unfortunately, Stainless prices, ka-ching!, have gone through the roof due to import restrictions and changes after 911, my supplyer (who incedentally also makes frames and bulkheads for a repro GT40 of it) won't make a batch of frame sections unless he is assured that he can buy a whole sheet of material and that I take ALL of the finished pieces off his hands...contact me off-line if you want to talk about it...'cause I dont feel like sitting on a bunch of them either!...

Ron;

..."residual moisture might be neutralized by the foam"...famous last words...in the first place you don't magigally "neutralize" moisture...or the chemical reduction action of iron...sorry to bring you the news, but it is a fact of nature that iron will turn to rust unless seperated from oxygen and moisture...and that's just about impossible on a car...paint and POR products are good and help a lot, but you are kidding yourself if you think you can stop mother nature (reference: the content of every junkyard, and events of the Indian Ocean 24 Dec 2004)!

Cheers
