Gas smell inside car 900

I made a thread about this a long time ago (on turbobricks actually), but have only now finally had the time to really look into the situation. To recap, my 94 940T wagon smells horrible after fillup. For example, I went and topped it up today, right before the super bowl, and didn't really notice anything on the 5 minute drive home. However, after the bowl, I went to my car, opened the door, and I could barely breathe, it REALLY smelled like gas. This happens every time I fill it up, and gradually goes away until the next refueling. Also, I get 12 MPG highway with a light foot, and like 10 or less city. Tried using 93 octane gas, no differance. Seafoam and fuel injector cleaner also haven't made much of an impact, if any.

So today I checked the plugs, they are all fine, insulators are still white, doesn't seem as though I'm running rich at all. Also checked the timing, I *think* it's right. I don't know much about timing, my gf's dad helped me with his timing light, but was rather confused by the markings. It seemed like it was 10 degrees AFTER TDC at idle, but then properly advanced as the RPM's went up. But overall, the car has as much spunk as it should, no reason to think the timing is really fscked.

There's no visible leaks of any sort... I pulled apart the interior to get at the filler tube section that goes through the cabin, but there were no leaks I could find inside the car around the filler tube. I did recently have a hole in the top of the gas tank patched (don't ask), but it was a reliable shop, and the car has been getting ****ty gas milage long before that incident.

So now I'm really, truly stuck. Not running rich, no obvious leaks, the filler tube inside the cabin seems fine. If anyone has any more ideas, I'd really love to hear them, as < 10 MPG is KILLING my tiny teenage wallet, and taking it to a mechanic will be expensive, and perhaps not even helpful.
