Wiper linkage to new wiper motor reinstall dilemma. . .(save me, please!) 200 1992

So I installed a new wiper motor this weekend, and I'm thinking, this is a snap: disconnect and unplug old motor, remove linkage mounting bolt behind glove box, and install the new motor. The motor is working great - however - I'm now stuck trying to figure out how to properly reconnect the linkage so that the wipers wipe where they're supposed to.

According to Bentley, reinstallation is the reverse of removal, however, I've tried in vain to reconnect the linkage a few times (beginning with the motor in park position of course), but the wipers either wipe down first rather than up the window (ouch - I now have a not so little scratch and and dimple in the hood on the passenger's side), or the range of motion is just off altogether. What am I missing here? Is there a trick to how/at what position I should be first reconnecting the linkage to the motor?

I know that originally, in order to get access to the mounting bolt with my socket, I had to run the wipers and stop them mid wipe - is the key hooking up the linkage in exactly the same place as it started? If so, I'm just not sure how to find that right beginning point again? You're guidance/expertise VERY appreciated!!
