Oil smells like fuel, perhaps 900 1993

While checking my oil level (945 no turbo), I noticed it had a solvent-like smell, not dissimilar to gasoline. New FPR and Lamda within the last 2K. Fuel consumption is moderate with 18 city 22-27 highway, depending on temp and which highway (parkway here, eg Taconic is around 24 mpg). The only fault code is 2-3-3. I assume that since this is a BOSCH igniiton, I have Motronic 1.8 and this code is idle outside normal range. My idle IS low and slightly irregular (especially when cold) but I cant see any possible connection.
The oil was changed around 2K ago. I supply my mechanic with Mobil 1, BUT I have no way of knowing if he actually uses it... The stuff does not smell like whats in the car.

How do I diagnose if this is indeed fuel (oxygen is a gas, gasoline is a fuel)? What possibilities exist for causes if it is geasoline, Injectors leaking, valves?

Thanks

PS this car has not performed as well as my 87 740GLE at many levels (performance, economy), very nice looking though.
