All good advice from Klaus. I'll warn you though, that if the mast has been in there for a while, it can be a bitch to get out.
The theory is:
- you remove the top nut
- turn on the radio
- when the mast reaches its full extent, you keep pulling
- the brass collar (which is what prevents the bottom mast section from popping out when the antenna extends fully) then pops out of the casing, and the whole mast, including the ridged nylon that the motor drives, just comes right out.
The reality I've found is that calcium (or lime or whatever) builds up between the brass collar and the casing, and its unbelievably difficult to remove. On my '86, I had to put the whole assembly in a vice and literally hammer on the mast (I think I had to vice grip onto it), in order to budge the collar.
Mind you, I didn't know about PB Blaster at the time, and maybe yours won't be as bad. I have a 93 940 now with a similar situation. I'm wondering if vinegar wouldn't loosen the buildup better, although I don't think it would be too good having it leak into the motor.
