starter switch for turning motor outside passenger compartment. Okay to hook up to starter? 200

I need to check my coil and electrical system as I am not getting a spark... I've got one of those switches with two wires w/ allegator clips to start engine outside. Can I just connect to large terminal and small wire terminal on starter... Or just hop it with large screwdriver like we used to do in the old days with simplier non computer ignition systems. I'd like to do this minor stuff w/o calling someone out to make a trip over to my place to turn over engine while I watch engine compartment.
