Fuel level sender - wire has corroded off 200 1987

On my 245 DL the fuel sender wire has corroded off of the unit. My Bentleys manual doesn't really tell me anything about how that wire comes through from the sending unit to where it comes out and connects to the external wiring. Is it possible to fish the wire out from where the unit is inside the fuel tank, pull it and re-crimp a new terminal? Or is it simply not worth the effort? My current method is to reset the trip odometer every fill-up, and when it hits 300 drive off for the gas station!

Thanks in advance!
