Hey all,
I've got a wierd problem on my 84 240 DL Wagon. It's a manual with O/D. I was driving home last week at night and my dash lights got all dim and the temp and fuel gauges started to droop. The heater fan slowed down and eventually stopped too. I got home, parked and went in. As you may have guessed the car didn't want to crank the next morning. So i jumped it off and it ran fine all the way to work.
I got the same results the following evenings. I replaced the alternator because I was worried that it wasn't charging the battery or up to the task of running full car electrical but the problem persists. I have isolated it to the point where i can only repeat the results by turning on the headlights. When i switch them on, with a fully charged battery and the engine running, I'll eventually run out of electrical power. Thus draining the battery. There is a distinction in current draw between having just the running and dash lights on as opposed to the headlamps. The problem only shows up with the headlights on.
I'm writing this story to see if anybody out there has experienced this problem or can steer me in the right direction for where to start looking for the culprit. My next step will be to replace the lamps and see if a broken filament could somehow cause the lights to draw all this current.
This car is kind of my last hope for vehicular provision at this point, so i have to make it work for a good while to come.
Any help would be appreciated !!
