1986 740 GLE odometer problem 700 1986

I'm having a problem with the odometer in my 1986 740 GLE Wagon. The speedometer works just fine but the odo plus trip will not turn.

Instead of repairing it I got in hold of a complete used cluster (same model and year), and with an odometer that is supposed to work.

After installing it I am still having the same problem - the speedo works but not the trip or odometer.

Is it possible that it could be a wiring problem to the back of the cluster or
could any of the wires have been switched? (The odometer did not work when I bought the car). It is most probably a problem with the gear in both of them but I just want to make sure that it couldn't be an electrical problem instead.
