selling 240 to buy 850? 200

So here's the question. My 240 wagon has been a good car overall. Stranded me only a couple of times in 7 years. However with 221,000 miles I'm thinking next year at the latest I need to replace it.

Today I saw an ad for a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT, 120K miles 5 speed with leather interior & probably well maintained for $3500. Talked to the seller who is a grad student in need of money. He has owned 240's before and may even consider a trade (for part of the $3500).

How dependable is an 850, especially the first model year 1993? Is it worth $3500?

And how much is my 1988 240 wagon worth with 221K miles? I'm thinking the very least I would take is $1000 meaning I would owe him $2500 for the 850. I really enjoy troubleshooting & working on the 240. Is the 850 too complicated for a shade tree mechanic?

Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike
