First Time Volvo Owner

For the clock, buy a small clock and stick it over the one you cannot set.

For the gas guage, snap the instrument panel with your finger right where the guage is. This technique can work for years! Sadly, your temperature gauge may go the same way.

The instrument cluster is EASY to remove, read the FAQ about gauge problems, often a little solder can fix the problem.

Read the FAQ anyway, a LOT of issues that you will encounter will be in there - like how to rebuild window switches, or why your 745 runs poorly when the fuel level is low (fuel pick-up problem - just keep more fuel in it)

My daughter drove a 1988 754 GLE for 8 years and 125,000 miles with only one failure (bad alternator brushes at 210,000 miles) She drove it from Massachusetts to Edmonton twice, Sasketchwan (?) once and the west coast twice. Each time she had all her stuff with her. The last trip, her sister joined her in Washington state and they had to mail three boxes home in order to use the passenger seat!

Have your son view the gallery (search for 700s) and visit some Volvo sites in Europe - he will see some really nice bricks. (When the engine wears out, a lot of them get V-8s installed)

BTW - you ought to see the '89 744 turbo that my other daughter was driving when the drunk driver slammed into her at an intersection. The speeding car hit her brick right at the front fender and door on the driver's side. The trauma center X-rayed her legs and hips because the ambulance attendants could not believe that she was not hurt! The three other teens in the car were OK also. The parents of these kids thanked us at the emergency room because Sharon would not drive unless they all buckled up.
