85 manual with no overdrive. 200 1985

I just brought home a 1985 245DL with the manual overdrive transmission. I have read some of the threads about needing to check the power to the switch on the actual shifter and the power to the solenoid on the overdrive unit. This will be my first major mechanical work (gulp) so an explanation of how to go about this for an idiot would be very helpful. Thanks!
