ABS light S90-V90 1998

On my 98 S 90 I am getting an intermittent ABS dash light. Sometimes it will be on at cold start up, sometimes not. Whichever it is, it stays that way until engine shut off. Next start up, the lamp may be on or it may not be. The local mechanic tells me no code has been set so really there is nothing to do at this point. Any other insight, experience etc. Thanks in advance for all recommendations
