B21A engine with Zenith carb. tune-up interpretations needed 200 1982

Howdy.

I have lowered a high idle down to around 900 rpm by lubing the choke and carb linkages and replacing the air filter and spark plugs, but at this speed the alternator and brake failure lights are on (alternator not charging I assume). These lights are gone at 1200 rpm.

Idle is pretty steady with a little fluctuating.

The engine also runs on sometimes for a few seconds after turning of the ignition.

Timing is about 12 deg BTDC (with distrubutor vacuum hose off), compared to the recommended 8 deg BTDC.

Exhaust seems quite smoky (grey-brown), with no signs of oil on the spark plugs and cylinder compression is excellent.

No leaks were found in the vacuum hoses by inspection and the propane method.

Questions:

1. does the carb need adjusting?

2. what kind of distributor (silver bottom) and ignition system does this engine have and how is the timing adjusted to the recommended 8 deg BTDC? see photo

thanks.
