Repairing a ZF Steering Rack 200 1984

I recently posted a question about an intermittent steering problem where the car would not turn. The suggestion was made to check the u joints on the steering shaft, which I did. Upon reassemble I noticed that the rack would bind up just as the input shaft would exhibit some excessive end play. I am not afraid to tear it apart and replace a bearing or bushing or whatever is causing this problem.

Does anyone have some instructions on rebuilding a ZF rack? Has anyone done it before? Are parts available? Do you think I should see a shrink and order a new rack? Your answers would be greatly appreciated even if you think I’m crazy!

Jon
