Steering Wheel rehab 140-160 1969

Along with dashboard, AC and heater repair on my 164, I'm thinking about
doing some work on the steering wheel. It doesn't have any cracks in it
but the outside of it is kinda rough and worn, blistered in a few places.
I'm wondering if I could sand it smooth and put a few coats of urethane
lacquer on it. Anybody done this?
