240 DOOR HANDLE FAILS TO OPEN 200 1990

When I bought my 240 sedan, the driver's door outside handle wouldn't open the door. I took the interior panel off and found that the metal rod that goes from the handle to the lock unit had slipped off the mounting on the handle. No broken parts. I reattached the rod using a zip tie because I couldn't get my ham hocks up there to use the clip. Worked ok for 6 months, but has slipped off again. Anyone have a secret for attaching that OEM clip?
