I will agree with you that a lot of reasoning on the whole "Proto over SK" is, in fact, based upon what my Uncles and Grandfather owned and I do not own a Proto tool that is not at least 20+ years old. I does not change the fact that the ones that I own serve me just as well today as when they were given to me 20+ years ago.
The only reason that I do own the SK wobbly sockets is because I've grown tired of spending $400.00+ on a set of Snappy sockets. The SK's were in the area of $125.00 so I decided to take the gamble. Back when Snap-On Flank drive sockets and wrenches were a proprietary thing you really had no choice in the matter. Now that the patent has run out and everybody and their dog can legally produce flank drive stuff the market has opened up a little bit. Competition is a good thing.
For the most part all of my wrenches, ratchets, and sockets are Snap-On. Those that are not are because Snappy either does not offer them or if they do they want way way too much for something that I can get elsewhere.
Your statement about your local sources being better really suprises me. Have you taken a look at The Tool Warehouse? If you are buying off brand stuff, other than Mac, Matco, or Snappy, you really owe it to yourself to take a look. Not only do they offer a much better selection than the average tool truck but their pricing, especially on their sale items, is awesome. I realize every man's situation is different but there are no really good tool stores in my area. There are well stocked ones but there are no breaks on the pricing unless you want cheap Chinese stuff (Harbor Freight). There are some good deals to be had at the Warehouse on stuff from OTC, SK, Gear Wrench, etc.
I hear what you're saying about no one tool nor one tool manufacturer. It is good to share opinions with a fellow tool nut, have a good day.
Regards, Mark
