heater issues 200 1986

i just bought another '86 wagon and once again...there is something wrong with the heater.. on my other 240 the bearings went out or whatever and it made a horrible noise and smell before dying...and still makes a "noise" if turned on. well i was told by the seller that my new 240 also has a bad heater motor..but i'm not getting any noise, smell...or anything when i try to turn it on. could this possibly be the switch or something else? what else goes wrong with these heaters? i dont want to replace the motor if i dont have to.
Thanks!
