Water in the gas tank 1800

We recently had a freeze here and water ended up in my tank. The car ran after the freeze a short distance but then stopped all together. The car will turn over but will not start. I disconnected the fuel line right before the carb. and turned it over-pumped it out until im pretty certain its just gas. i removed the top of the carb. bowls and drained them- there was some pretty nasty stuff in there though. Everything back together and i turn it over- still no start. Ive read on here that i should try some starting fluid and dry gas( which ive never used nor do i know where to buy it). ive read other places to try pouring mineral spirits in the tank. I was wondering whats safest for my car and also- why wont it start still? i looked in the bowls and the crud is still there but significantly less. if thats in my carbs how do i clean it. and what steps do i need to take to purge the rest of the system? Thanks
