Diesel 240 200 1984

I have just acquired a 1984 diesel 244. I plan to convert it to run on waste vegetable oil (wvo). I have an unlimited supply as I own a restaurant. The car is in good shape and had an engine rebuild at 150K miles (it has 204K on it now)It has new timing belts and starts well, even in the cold, but it is LOUD and puts out quite a large cloud of smoke when it starts up. It runs well (though a bit sluggish). I have no experience with diesel cars (but I have owned other Volvos) and my main question is, is this all normal? Are all diesels loud and smokey? Should I adjust the valves and put some fuel treatment in it or have it looked at by a diesel mechanic? Any input from other 240 diesel owners would be appreciated
