Do I really need this hose? 200

On the top of the control pressure regulator (k-jet) there is a fitting for what I think should be a U-shaped piece of hose that I believe to be a vent to the atmosphere. I found a picture of this in the Clymer 1975-1987 manual (p.198). On my brick this hose is broken off (only a tiny stub and the hose clamp remain) Presumably the u-shaped hose is to prevent crud from falling into the opening? How necessary is this? I'm guessing it would be another order-from-dealer-wait-for-days-situation. Could I take a piece of fuel line and hold it in a bent shape with a cable tie or some other simple fix?
Special thanks to Mario and Bruce for getting me through the wiring harness work on this project - I think I've finally got all the bare wires replaced and rerouted. Karin
