Starter 'Clatter' 200 1988

So I climbed in the trusty old brick last night and hit the starter. To my suprise I wasn't rewarded with the usual regular "chug chug chug" starter sound... although that was still there. Instead, I distinctly heard what I can only describe as a "clatter" as the starter spun. The clatter went away immediately when the engine caught and I let go of the starter, and I could hear it "wind down" when the key was released as well.

My question is this: Is my starter about to die on me? If so, how long do I have? I have at least started to carry around a hammer just in case something gets stuck and I have to give it a whack.

Let me know what you guys think
