Wheels / Rims 700

I went to the wreckers the other day and salvaged 5 x 15inch Nova wheels for my 760gle 1984. These are to replace the ugly looking large hub wheels that came with models of this era.

These Nova Wheels are the spangled wire looking wheels with a centre hub covering the 5 lugs, you can see pics of them here http://brickparts.d--r.com/wheels/ .

When I went to put the new tyres on these wheels and fit them to my car, I had to remove 1 little pin that was secured onto the face of each disc. This pin seemed to fit into a little hole in my old stock wheels.

My question is, What is these pins used for and is it safe to remove it from the discs. (I am driving around without these pins now)

Maybe its my imagination but these rims seem to get very hot, is this normal ?

Any opinions on these wheels ? (I was tossing up between the Nova and the Virgo Turbo and Draco)
