turn signal stick 140-160

my turn signal stick on my '74 164 was completly mangled, kinda hanging loosly out of the steering column and sparking the contacts sometimes. so I took it out and used an old Jenn Air range fan/light switch to substitute for the turn signal switch, and used a door switch from a dryer or something for the headlight dipper switch. obviously, this setup is extreemly tacky and, though I have all the regular features except the auto-off feature for turning corners. but, I wish to replace it with something original. does the signal stalk for the '71 140 series fit the 164? basically, does the stalk from the original design carry over through the '73 interior/exterior redesign of the 140/160? I assume that the internal parts of the signal indicator would be the same, but would the auto-return work with the later-model steering wheel? does anyone have any knowledge on the subject before I go ripping the insides of my cars apart?
