Transmission 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 with about 138k miles. It does not shift smoothly into gear and I have to rev it to about 3500 RPM before it shifts. The only way to avoid this is to ease off on the pedal so it can shift into the next gear. I don’t feel comfortable with this behavior. I have flushed the tranny with a Mercon III tranny fluid. My intention is to flush it again after three months with a Mobil 1 synthetic. Can someone please help me diagnose this? Do I have to change the kick-down cable? And if so, is it relatively easy to do, considering the fact that I have only changed engine oil, filters, and recently flushed the tranny using the flush kit? Please help!
