Water and a bit of steam out of the tailpipe in the morning: '86 240 250k miles 200 1986

Noticed that the water droplets were coming out of my Dad's '86 240 while I was following him yesterday morning. Also..we were in New Orleans and it was a balmy 60 degrees and I saw a bit of steam coming out of the tailpipe. I'm wondering how the engine coolant path is setup inside the engine....(I've never torn an engine apart)....is there a way for the head gasket to leak water into the exhaust but not into the oil? The oil looked fine when I changed it out.
