volvo 780 gas gauge problem 1989 700

I saw some info on the net about placing a resistor in line with the gas gauge or the sending unit. I am not even sure how go find the sending unit on the gas tank..is there an access panel on the car? Do I take the instrument cluster out to put the resistor on the gauge..please clarify..thanks..Jeffrey..
