Fuel Gauge Sender 444-544

I'm changing a 1958 444 to 12 volts as part of converting to B20 power. I have the dash apart and the fuel gauge removed along with the fuel gauge from a B18 544 parts car. The fuel senders are totally corroded on both cars.

I guess my first question is whether anyone out there can tell me how to come up with a fuel gauge that will look stock and work with 12 volts in the 444?

After looking at the two gauges it seems to me that it may be possible to use the 544 gauge electrical parts in my 444 gauge holder. So now I am trying to work up a sender to drive the 544 gauge components.

I hope avoid spending the $100 for a Volvo sender by using a $25 generic sender left over from an airplane that I built a few years ago. It matches the bolt pattern in the Volvo tank but I have not been able to get it to work with the gauge when I bench test it.

Can someone out there tell me the OHMS of the Volvo fuel sender/gauge combo? My generic sender ranges from about 230 OHMS (empty) to about 30 OHMS (full).

If no answer here, I'm going to try to rig up a variable resistor out of a potentiometer to discover what it takes in OHMS to move the gauge. (Problem is, I'm beyond the edge of my limited electrical know-how here, but I think its worth a try.)

Thanks in advance for whatever clues you can offer.
