I was a Research Specialist and technician in my early years, did a lot of high vacuum work and prototype machining and toolmaking. At the time, I was given every tool I could want, so I got a set of Snap-On SAE sockets 3/8 and 1/4 drive and S-K metric 3/8 and 1/4 sockets also, both 6pt abd 12pt. My choice for combination wrenches was Armstrong which are perhaps the finest I have ever used. That was 26 years ago. I have had the Snap-on socket wrenches fail, a couple of busted sockets, too (mostly working on the old '68 144 that I had!)I rarely use the SAE now except maybe for the lawn tractor.
The S-K are very well made and are machined with close tolerances. I love their socket handles, they have a great surness to them, which I can't say about the Snap-on. Proto, I have some odd items like a set of crow-foot sockets and offset open end sockets and the fit and finish is not good at all, nowhere close to either S-K and Snap-on. I still have and use these tools all the time, and prefer to use the S-K especially the 1/4 metric set on the 240 using all the torx bits that are needed. Not sure if S-K are made the same now as they were then, but they were the top choice of any master technician. I know that there was a point in the '80's where they almost went under, and came back with a more wide distribution and are now readily available.
