Maybe one of the fuel pumps?
There are two, neither of which is a very easy job.

The '89 has a computer w/ "Check Engine" light and trouble codes.
If the computer detected a problem this system would activate.
Since it didn't, it would likely not be one of those problems.

BUT - verify the "Check Engine" light is working. Should light up when you start the car, when the other instrument cluster trouble lights come on.
If it doesn't light, likely the bulb is missing or burned out.
