Is there a way to buff out the years of damage to my windshield 200 1985

I don't see my self getting a new windshield anytime soon and I was wondering if anyone has a trick or two on how to buff out the years of wear. I was told to use a fine steel wool,0000, and for a quick clean up it works great. If the windows aren't to dirty you can avoid the mess of regular windex, paper towels and the streak or two that never seem to go away and you get a show room shine. But I'm needing something a bit more aggresive.
