Mystery brake part dissected plus more questions 120-130

Hey all,

As promised, I dissected the mystery brake part I asked about last week (apparently an accessorry from IPD 10 years ago). Since I haven't had a chance to figure out how to post pictures here yet, they're posted here: http://www.speakeasy.org/~adatesman/brakes.html

Long story short, there isn't much to it. There's a piston inside that is backed up by a rubber piece, which I guess basically softens the pressure on the brakes a bit. From seeing how it works, I can't really see a point to it and figure its more trouble than its worth.

Unfortunately, I seem to have run into a problem removing it as I can't figure out the fittings to connect the brake ine directly to the master cylinder. The brake line has some sort of compression fitting on it, which has what looks like a pipe thread on the other side. The fitting on the other side of the mystery part is the same, but with the compression fitting side in the master cylinder. I would have though the master would be tapped for a pipe thread, but it doesn't appear to be the case on this one. Is there a special fitting used here that I'm missing? For now I think I'll just reinstall the mystery part without its internals so I can get the convertible back into the garage before the midatlantic gets hit with another big snowstorm. But I'd really like to get it back together properly as soon as possible. Any thoughts or comments most welcome.

Thanks,

-aric.
