weird feeling in steering wheel 200 1986

my 86 volvo 245 estate has been such a great car, but here recently i've noticed a weird feeling with the steering wheel as i turn it, usually in the same spot as it would before.my question is simple, is there a way to get into the steering colum and look to see what's giving me the problem without having any problems?? as i turn the steering wheel, I'll feel it catch on something or mabe even a bolt loose inside it. any help on this would really be appreciated.
respectfully,

volve,
salt lake city, Utah
