HELP! BAD TIMING! 700

I had to replace the timing belt on my '85 740. But I think that my damper wheel slipped on it's rubber mount now, because the notch that is supposed to be at zero is NOT on zero when the number one piston is upright in firing position. So I made my own notch. Put the timing belt on, timed it based on that new notch(12degrees at 750rpm). But it's still running like crap! It's still missing! Why the hay can I not get the right timing? Is is a common problem? Is it my damper wheel? Can anyone tell me what the real problem is and how I can fix it?

oh, i replaced the plugs...not the wires. the wires seem to be in good shape and I don't want to drop that much money unless i know it's the problem. anyway, the way it's running it feels like it's missing WAY more than telling me the problem is the plug wires.
