Thinking ahead - will a later head from a 940 turbo fit this 89 B230F? 700

If it's the valves that are clacking, then you should try adjust the valve lash before you swap out heads, If you have clean plugs but, you are still blowing oil, then the valve seals are gone.

You MIGHT want to swap heads or do a valve job. Personally, I would do the valve job rather than swap heads. You'll have even more headaches if you swap heads that will fall into the "Undocumented features" sections of being a major PITA !!!

Try adjusting the valve lash first, and REMEMBER a loose valve is a happy valve even if it makes a bit of chatter.

What you might find is a few of the valves out of tolerance, the procedure is not difficult,

Mine has 195K on it and it people ask me if it's a diesel, I told them NO but, one of our cats is named Diesel.
