Alternator Swap 200 1984

During the past winter months, the alternator on my 84 244DL went kaput. I went to Autozone, told them I needed an alternator for my car. They failed to mention that there was two different types, a 55 amp and a 70 amp. They sold me the 55 amp. Now if run anything more than my headlights, my battery discharges because the alternator isn't keeping up. I've gone to the Autozone store that I bought the alternator from and the manager wouldn't do anything for me except order the 70 amp and I'd have to eat the $70 I spent on the 55 amp. Now, I'm about to move to Texas (and yes, I'm driving my car from Ohio to Texas without any hesitation) so I'm trying to save as much money as I can. If I purchase the 70 amp alternator it's gonna be to the tune of $175. That's some serious money to a guy like me. That's a 1/4 of what I initially paid for the car last year.

However, I have a buddy of mine who is getting ready to junk his 91 Pontiac Grand Am because of a broken cv joint and broken axle. The Grand Am has an 8 month old 105 amp alternator on it. The problem is that my buddy lives about 70 miles away and I don't have access to look at his alternator. I'm wondering if anyone knows if I would be able to put his alternator on my car without too much trouble?

I would like to get a new alternator on my car before I make the 1300 miles trek to Houston. Right now, I'm unable to listen to the radio because if I do, I'm afraid the battery will discharge. That long of a road trip without tunes would be quite miserable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Thanks,

Matt
