M46 Overdrives

I have a 79 240 with a M46 and a slipping overdrive. I have a very low mileage M46 w/ J type overdrive from a 84 760 Turbo. I would like to put this trans in my 240. It does not have the speedo output on the od case. The question is can I simply remove the rear most part of the od housing and replace it with the one from my 240 which has the hole for the speedo cable? Or do I completely have to disassemble the overdrives to do this? Will the 740 output shaft even have the splines to turn the speedo gear?
Also, do these transmissions have the same first gear ratio?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Paul
