engine died - help with diagnosis! 200 1991

I have posted questions here before - finally bought my 245! It's a beaut. My parents picked it up and drove it here to Cincinnati from central NY - 600 miles. About 500 miles into the trip the SRS light went on for a few minutes, then went out... then went back on. Mom decided to get off the highway, pulled into a gas station, put it in park, and it died. Couldn't start it. AAA jumped it. Decided to leave it there - a friend and I rented a truck and trailer and fetched it the next night. It started then and every subsequent attempt. My friend has ruled out alternator or battery problems and suspects something between the starter and battery. Ideas?
