Note that it was NOT my explanation - one I found on the web.

Stanford didn't think so at the time. In fact I had to take a couple
units of undergrad research to get my GPA up to where I could graduate.
(I suspect it was harder 40+ years ago....)
And further, the only English course I got a decent grade in was technical
writing (a slam dunk!).
I got better grades in Spanish than in English. Literary criticism is NOT
my bag!

But anyway, thanks for the kind comments!
