Is a 740T an appropriate car for my daughter? 700

Hi all. I've heard wonderful things about the durability of Volvos, and am attracted to their proud non-conformity. My teenage daughter has accepted a college internship in a state 1000 miles away, and needs a reliable car to get there and commute with. There is a 1991 740T for sale with 140K miles that looks nice and runs well. I know you'll tell me it will make it to 300K miles, but my question is about day-to-day reliability; can it go 5 months and 10K miles without tinkering, tuning and tweaking? Will a Volvo dealer rip her off if she has to take it in? She is clueless about cars, and I won't be there to help. Would this car be more or less reliable than a 1998 Taurus with 60K miles at the same price? Thanks for taking time to help a newbie!
