Mixing different grades of motor oil 200 1991

Hey everyone,

I'm a first-time poster but a long time reader. My family has owned one Volvo or another (all RWD) for many years and we do a lot of the routine maintenance ourselves so we're familiar with Volvo quirks and virtues. Currently we have a 1995 964 and a 1991 244.

My dad recently bought a case 20W-50 oil because he wrongly thinks that thicker is always better for our hot California weather. I'm gonna buy a case of 10W-30 oil, which I plan to either use straight or mix 50/50 with the heavier stuff. Both grades are Castrol GTX.

Would mixing the two grades yield a net viscosity rating of 15W-40, which is the heaviest recommended grade, or would it cause problems (sludge, leaking, etc.)?

Thanks.
