86 240 hesitates when cold 200

My son is driving our old 1986 240 wagon and found it to hesitate when cold. It starts up fine, however when you accelerate it hesitates and gradually picks up speed. After driving for a few minutes it runs fine. Can anyone help me as to what is wrong. Thank You
