1990 760t won't start 700

Here's the story. Took the wife 4 tries to get the car started this morn. Usually starts on the first attempt. Came out after work and the car started on the first try. After coming home the kid took the car to work (pizza delivery)and it started right up first try. After getting to work, went to make a delivery and the car won't start. Went over to check it out in the dark and found it is getting spark. However, i do not hear the fuel pump under the car when the key is turned to the on position. I should hear it hum for a second, Is this a typical death for a fuel pump or does it usually die all at once? What would be the next steps in troubleshooting the problem? Is there anything else that would keep the fuel pump from running other than the death of the pump.
