89 740 Turbo M46 OD Solenoid? 700 1989

Hello, I have written on this before, but now I got the OD to work, It turns out it was the wires to the switch were broken. I replaced the switch temporarily with an aftermarket horn button. Now the OD works quite well, unless the car gets up to/past normal operating temp. (sometimes it runs just a tad hot but not enough to warant alarm or action) It will go in and out of OD when it is cold up until just before normal, however my father claims that he has gotten it in after the car was quite up to temp. Is this a solenoid problem? or is it an internal problem? the relay seems to be working, because the "5" light comes on in the dash, and I hear the relay working. Also, is it crucial to use the clutch to shift into and out of OD? I know on the old Austin Healeys with electric OD you could just flip the switch.

Anything is helpful!
Regards,
Tim
