Speedometer showing 200 KMH! 200

I have a 1987 Volvo 240 wagon.

I'm just finishing up that joyful job of replacing the blower motor — for those who've done it, just nod in sympathy — and I've come up with an interesting glitch that has even stumped my mechanical engineer and sports car enthusiast neighbour.

I toss myself sacrificially on the alter of the Brickboard community . . .

When I hook up the speedo — in what I think is a correct manner since most of the plugs are idiot proof — the speedo comes to life registering 200 kmh. It would seem to be a reversal of wiring. We're now wondering if there is a glitch in the plug itself. (The funny white one with the odd plastic cover at back of speedo.)

Any thoughts? My wife wants the car back.
