Overdrive on 1986 240 wagon 200

I just got a terrific deal on a 1986 240 wagon automatic. The car has some problems and I have fixed all but one, the overdrive. The indicator arrow was coming on and I replaced the relay. Now the light does go on and off in response to the switch on the shifting lever. I took the car on a drive and the overdrive was still not engaging. I went under the car and found a white wire that drops down from the interior of the car, goes into a clip, and is then busted off and goes nowhere! I'm sure this is the culprit but I can't figure out where the wire goes to. Some suggestions please. Also, on the rear of the overdrive there are large threaded holes with nothing bolted into them. It was dark and my wife needed the car so that is all the info I have now. Thanks a lot!
