The base connects to a hose that drains into the oil pan. If you pull this hose up too far so as to unhook it from the clamp holding it in the pan, then you have to drop the pan to replace it. Be VERY CAREFUL in removing the stub end down in the hole. See the FAQ for tips and photos.
